Abbey Barn, South West, England

Abbey Barn stands near Glastonbury Abbey but outside its grounds.  It was used by the Abbey to store not only its own crops but the local tithes payable to the abbey.  The tithe barn dates from the 14th century and is an exceptional example of a high quality barn built of ashlar block stone.

The large arched entrance would have allowed wagons to unload and exit the other side without the need to turnaround. The ventilation holes were required for air circulation to keep crops dry. The roof timbers have been dated using dendrochronology and the trees were felled between 1343-1361
