Byland Abbey
Byland was a Cistercian abbey that grew to be one of the largest Cistercian Orders in England. Byland is a 12th century building but it has the most extensive collections of medieval tiles in any ruined site. The tiles date mainly from the 13th & 14th centuries.
There are 40 different shapes of tile present at Byland. It is thought that the tiles were made on site.
