Escomb Saxon Church, North East England
There are very few Saxon sites in the UK which also have a substantial surviving building. Escomb church is a rare example of a Saxon church. Dating from the 7th century. Created in part from an old Roman fort, Roman inscriptions can still be seen on some of the stones. The church also contains a Saxon sundial, and Saxon stone crosses.
There is key information on the door; you can usually gain access at reasonable times.
