Funicular, budapest
The Funicular, in Budapest, feels more like an amusement park ride than it does public transport, but public transport is what it was created for. The vertical bus that runs, quite literally, up castle hill. Its journey is 100 meters in length and 50 meters in height, on a 30-degree tilt. The Funicular is the second of its kind in Europe, (with the first being in Lyon, France). It started carrying passengers in 1870, when it was created to transport people working on Castle Hill.
In 1944, the Funicular in Budapest was destroyed during the bombings, and while there were plans for its restoration, it was not restored until 1986, when it finally reopened and quickly became a tourist attraction. One year after it opened, it was listed as a World Heritage site. In March of 2020, the Funicular became 150 years old. It is still the best way to get to the top of Castle Hill.
