Kirkstall Abbey, Yorkshire & Humberside England
The remains of Kirkstall Abbey, a once large Cistercian monastery, are located on the bank of the River Aire in Kirkstall. The monastery was founded in the 12th century and continued until the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The abbey was founded by Henry de Lacy, Lord of Pontefract who having survived a serious illness agreed to give the Abbot of Fountains Abbey land at on which to found a daughter abbey.
