Marmion Tower, Yorkshire, England

All that remains of the medieval manor today is the gatehouse, known as Marmion Tower.  The gatehouse is crenellated in the fashion of a castle but was not provided with a portcullis or arrow loops, indicating that it was only done for aesthetics.

The tower was remodelled several times after its original construction in the second half of the 14th Century. Its upper rooms served as domestic chambers.  The first floor room was lit by a large oriel window.

In 1513, the manor passed to Elizabeth Parr, grandmother of Queen Katherine Parr, the last wife of Henry VIII.
