Old Beaupre Castle, South Wales
More of a manor house than a castle, it was re-built in large part in the 16th century by Richard Basset. Although part of the castle dates from 1300. The arched entrance in the double storied porch was built in with neo-classical decoration.
Inscribed with the initials of Richard Basset and his wife the motto reads
‘Better death than dishonour’
this view is from the courtyard where you are surrounded by the curtain walls. This porch dated from 1600 and was probably the only stonework visible the rest having been rendered originally.
