St. Laurence’s Saxon Church, South West, England

This amazing little church dates perhaps from the 8th century if we are to believe William of Malmesbury who recorded that date and wrote it down in 1125. There is some debate over the dating of this church and it is possible that it dates nearer to the 10th century.  Whether it dates from the 8th or 10th century it is one of the most complete Saxon buildings in existence.

The building is still the size it was built never having been extended as many churches were.  St. Laurence is an authentic Saxon church, its footprint unaltered, and a rare survival.
